The most important question you will ever be asked is, “Are you saved?”
I believe the second most important question is, “Are you sure?”
Many people answer the question of salvation in different ways. Some say:
- “I have been baptized.”
- “I am a member of a church.”
- “I try to live a good life.”
While these things may be good, they are not what the Bible means by being saved.
To be saved means to be delivered from danger.
For example, if someone were drowning and another person pulled them out of the water, they could truly say, “I was saved.” They were delivered from danger and brought to safety.
What Is Biblical Salvation?
Biblical salvation is being delivered from the penalty of sin. That penalty is death and hell.
Just as a drowning person is saved from water and brought to dry land, a sinner is saved from hell and given eternal life in heaven.
We would not know anything about heaven or salvation if it were not for the Bible. So instead of guessing how to get to heaven, let’s look at what the Bible teaches.
What the Bible Teaches
No one deserves heaven.
Romans 3:10 says:
“There is none righteous, no, not one.”
Romans 3:23 says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
These verses teach that no matter how good we think we are, we cannot earn heaven. We have all sinned, and God is perfectly holy. Because of our sin, we are not fit to stand in His presence on our own.
The Bible also tells us that because we have sinned, we face death.
Romans 6:23 begins by saying:
“For the wages of sin is death…”
This death is more than physical death. Everyone will die physically one day, whether saved or not. This verse is speaking about spiritual death, which is separation from God.
Revelation 20:14 says:
“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”
Because of our sinful nature, we all deserve separation from God in hell. But Romans 6:23 does not end there.
It continues:
“But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
God’s Gift of Salvation
God loves us so much that even though we are sinners, He gave us a gift—His Son, Jesus Christ.
John 3:16 says:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God knew we could never live up to His perfect standard. So He sent His perfect Son to take our place. Jesus made a way for us to be saved from hell and receive eternal life in heaven.
Romans 10:9 says:
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:13 says:
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Jesus suffered and died on the cross for our sins so that we could spend eternity with God. He took our sin upon Himself, and in return, He gives us His righteousness.
2 Corinthians 5:21 says:
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
God is willing to give us the righteousness we need to go to heaven. Salvation is not earned—it is a gift. All we must do is believe, confess, and call upon Jesus Christ.
Calling on Jesus
You can call on Jesus by praying and asking God to save you. You can pray in your own words, but here is a simple prayer you can use to express your faith in Jesus Christ:
Dear Jesus,
I know that I am a sinner and that I deserve to be separated from You.
I am truly sorry for my sins, and I ask You to forgive me.
I believe that You died on the cross and rose again to pay for my sins.
I ask You to come into my life and be my personal Savior.
Help me to live for You.
Thank You for saving me.
Amen.
If you prayed and trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are now a child of God. You are saved.
Can You Be Sure?
The Bible tells us we can be sure of our salvation.
1 John 5:12–13 says:
“He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life.”
If you have received Jesus Christ, you have the Son of God. And if you have the Son, you have life—eternal life. Eternal means forever.
Salvation is God’s gift, not something we earn. And God promises that His gift is eternal. Because of that promise, you can be sure.
